🤖 What Turnitin's AI detector reports
Turnitin's AI writing indicator gives a percentage of the document it believes was generated by a large language model (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar), with the flagged passages highlighted. Universities in Malaysia see this next to the similarity score, and many treat a high AI percentage as an integrity case even when similarity is low.
The score is only produced for documents between about 300 and 30,000 words, in supported languages (English is best supported; Bahasa Melayu is scored less consistently).
⚡ What pushes the score up
- Text pasted from ChatGPT or "improved" by AI rewriting tools without real editing
- Very uniform sentence length and vocabulary — the statistical signature Turnitin looks for
- Paraphrasing tools and "humanizers": they change words, not the pattern, and often score higher
- Long, generic introductions and conclusions
Grammar checkers and citation tools such as Grammarly or Citation Machine do not by themselves trigger it.

Is Turnitin AI detection accurate?
Turnitin reports a false-positive rate under 1% at document level for scores above 20%, but individual sentences can be flagged wrongly. Universities are advised to treat it as an indicator, not proof — which is exactly why seeing it first helps you prepare.
Does Turnitin detect AI in Bahasa Melayu?
Partly. AI detection is strongest for English; Malay documents may receive no AI score or a less reliable one. The similarity report works fully in Malay.
Will a humanizer tool lower my AI score?
Usually not, and often it raises it while also making the writing worse. Rewriting in your own words, with your own examples and data, is what lowers it.
Is Originality.ai the same as Turnitin AI detection?
No. Originality.ai is a separate commercial detector aimed at publishers; its score is not what your lecturer sees.
